EARTH PACKAGING: Pet food packed in Earthpouch shortlisted for top award

Earthpouch - Skinner's chose our plastic-free pouch for their new dog treats range

A UK pet food brand which packs dog treats in our plastic-free & recyclable Earthpouches has been shortlisted for a top award.

Heritage pet food brand Skinner’s is one of 5 finalists in the Sustainability Awards 2021 in the bio-based packaging category.

Skinner’s have been shortlisted alongside Fibers 365 GmbH (Recovering functional, carbon negative, virgin fibres); Huhtamaki & McDonalds (fibre-based beverage and sundae cups to replace existing PS and PET packaging); Mi Terro (ocean degradable and home compostable flexible packaging), and Timeplast (programmable, water-soluble bio-based resin substitute for polyolefins in single-use applications).

Winners will be announced at Fachpack, Nuremberg, on September 29.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Skinner’s have a great product, and have made sustainability a core part of their business moving forwards, so it is great news that they have been shortlisted for this award.

“They are in there with some big names, which shows how tough even making the final 5 is in these awards as they are very popular.”

Skinner’s launched their new range of dog treats in March, choosing to pack their product in our award-winning Earthpouch.

The three new products have been added to their Field & Trial range to coincide with a rebranding of the whole range and the moving of all their pet food into more sustainable, recyclable packaging.

The three Skinner’s dog treats packed in Earthpouch are:

·        Dental & Digestive Dog Treats – Peppermint & charcoal

·        Joint & Conditioning Dog Treats – With salmon oil

·        Dog Training Treats – Rich in chicken protein

Having decided all their packaging needed to be recyclable, Skinner’s began using Earthpouch for dry food, and TetraPak for their wet food.

Skinner’s, a seventh-generation family-owned pet food supplier, provide pet food for working dogs – and the packs include original artwork by Angela Harding which fits with their ‘born to be outdoors’ motto.

The company has been manufacturing pet food for 50 years.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Skinner’s new pouches look great, the designs are very eye-catching, and have successful portrayed the heritage of the brand, while giving them a modern look.

“Dry pet food snacks are the perfect product for Earthpouch – and there really is no need for products like this to be in plastic anymore.

“It was great to see a brand like Skinner’s take the decision to move away from plastics to a more sustainable, eco-friendly packaging, and I am sure being shortlisted helps reinforce that they made the right decision.

“I wish them luck at the finals in September – they deserve to win.”

Earthpouch is a plastic-free, recyclable stand-up pouch. A water-based coating gives the required barrier, and the whole pouch when finished with can simply be put into the paper recycling stream.

It’s also suitable for many other products including: chocolate and confectionery; bakery products; tea and coffee; vitamins and nutritional supplements; granola; porridge oats, and much more.

Sirane has four main divisions: food packaging; medical & healthcare; horticultural and industrial. The company is based in Telford, Shropshire, with two additional sites in the UK, plus additional manufacturing in Guadalajara (Mexico), and Moscow (Russia).
