EARTH PACKAGING: Plastic-free seal of approval for Earthpouch and Earthfilm from A Plastic Planet…

Plastic Free - trust mark from APP

SIRANE’S award-winning packaging ‘Earthpouch’ has been given the plastic-free seal of approval by campaigners and lobbyists A Plastic Planet (APP).

The certification from APP allows anyone looking at using the Earthpouch or Earthfilm to apply to APP to use their official Plastic-Free trust mark on packaging.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “As a company, we’re proud of the fact that our customers can now apply to use the plastic-free trust mark on their packaging. Labelling can often be confusing, but the plastic-free trust mark is simple – it tells the consumer that they are buying a product which does not contain plastics.

“There’s no confusion, it’s simple, plastic-free means just that – plastic-free.”

The Earthpouch is a plastic-free stand-up pouch. It is also available as Earthbag (not -free standing) and Earthfilm (film on reel for flow-wrapping applications).

Now available in standard, barrier and high-barrier, the material is ideal for anyone looking to remove unnecessary plastics from their packaging. Although it is often used for food, the material can also be used for many non-food applications.

The materials can be recycled with the paper stream – a fact that was also recently endorsed by the UK Recycling Association following rigorous testing procedures.

Perfect for a range of dry and moist products – including granolas, porridge oats, grains, health/diet supplements and more – the Earthpouch is a paper-based solution with a heat-sealable coating, which is preformed into a stand-up pouch.

Simon Balderson added: “Earthpouch is a plastic-free solution, a paper-based material with a plastic-free coating which is perfect for a range of products. We can supply it with a range of different barriers, to suit your packaging needs.

“If you’re serious about moving away from plastics, then this – and many of the other products in our Earth Packaging range – might be exactly what you’re looking for.

“Plastic-free aisles in supermarkets are growing in popularity, and customers want to know that products genuinely are plastic-free. APP’s trust mark means customers can buy a product confident that there truly is no plastic anywhere to be seen.

“It’s great to also have official endorsement from the UK Recycling Association, and it gives our customers the added reassurance that it has indeed been tested.”

A Plastic Planet – https://aplasticplanet.com – was founded to ‘ignite and inspire the world to turn off the plastic tap’. APP focuses ‘on the use of conventional plastic; especially that used in packaging and single-use’, stating that ‘recent history has proven that recycling this kind of plastic if not the answer. It has little value, is mostly down-cycled, too difficult to reclaim and often contaminated’.

For just £50 per SKU, companies using the Earthpouch or Earthfilm can let their customers buy the product confident that it is 100% free of any plastic, by placing the trust mark in a prominent place on the front, visible on shelf.

2018 was a big year for the Earthpouch with some major industry recognition– it won a Green Apple Award, presented at the Houses of Parliament, and it also secured first place at the UK Packaging Awards in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category. The Earthpouch was also recognised at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.

One of the questions we’re often asked is ‘how do I fill the pouch?’ We’ve also recently added a pouch-filling line to our offering, the M7, which is compatible with the Earthpouch – and there will be a working machine on our stand.

The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.

We’re already working on enhancing and expanding the Earthpouch range, including higher-barrier pouches, ovenable versions and more – the Earthpouch is not just a product, it’s the start of a whole range of plastic-free products.

Other products in the Earth Packaging range include our new paper based absorbent pads – which are both compostable & recyclable, compostable & breathable packaging films, and compostable food packaging boards.

Sirane is an innovative food packaging development-to-manufacture company, with expertise in absorbency and material science. Specialisms include bags and pouches, absorbent products, shelf-life extension and dual-ovenable products.

MD Simon Balderson will be among the guest speakers later this month at the Plastic-Free World Conference & Expo in Frankfurt, Germany. Simon will be talking on Day 2: June 28, as part of the food packaging stream, where the morning session will be ‘bio-based and non-plastic alternatives to traditional plastic packaging’.

The expo runs from June 27-28 – Sirane is also exhibiting, find us on Stand 11. A Plastic Planet will also be represented at Plastic-Free World Conference & Expo.
