SIRANE will unveil something brand new at Packaging Innovations in Birmingham next week– a sustainable alternative to the traditional plastic plant pot.
Our new Earthboard Resolve is just like any other plant pot – except that it’s made from a specially-formulated water-proof card, is compostable and recyclable.
Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Plastic plant pots are everywhere – and they don’t have to be. This is a great solution, and the pots have everything. They are rigid, they will repel water, they will compost and can be recycled.
“Customers won’t need to fill their sheds with unwanted and unneeded plastic plant pots, they will simply be able to go home and plant this in the ground…. and if they don’t want or need to plant it, it can just go in with the paper recycling.”
A recent survey by Horticulture Week revealed that 87% of the local authorities questioned do not recycle plant pots – meaning millions end up in landfill.
Karl Heggarty, Sirane Sales Manager for our Horticultural division, said: “Recently I visited IPM Essen and there were plastic plant pots everywhere. They come in all shapes and sizes, and in a range of colours, and globally the number of these plastic pots ending up in landfill must be an absolutely mind-boggling number.
“We’re really pleased to be able to present this solution to the market – we can replace the plastic plant pot with a sustainable, water-proof card version, and can even print them any colour you like – they won’t even need to be black.”
The Earthboard Resolve can also be formed into a sapling protector – a sustainable alternative to the plastic protectors commonly used to protect young trees.
Earthboard Resolve is the latest in a list of products added to our Earth Packaging range which are ideally for use in the horticultural and floral trade.
These include our original compostable plant pot product Sow and Grow Resolve, our breathable and compostable flower-wraps, compostable absorbent flower-pouches, and of course our award-winning plastic-free Earthpouch.
Sirane’s award-winning plastic-free Earthpouch could be perfect for companies selling into the horticultural market looking to ‘go green’ with packaging.
The Earthpouch – winner of a UK Packaging Award first place and a Green Apple Award, and shortlisted in the top 10 for the Innovations Gallery at Packaging Innovations – could be ideal for seeds, bulbs, plant foods, fertilisers and more.
Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “The Earthpouch is plastic-free and easy to recycle, it can go in the paper stream, so it ticks all the right environmental boxes. It’s suitable for any dry and moist products and can have a high-barrier if required.
“Here in the UK, and overseas, many customers are looking to change their packaging and make it more environmentally friendly – and acceptable to the public. There are viable alternatives to plastic in some instances, and this is one of them.
“The Earthpouch – an industry first – is made from a paper with a 100% plastic free heat-sealable coating which is then formed into a preformed stand-up pouch. We can also supply it in bag format, or as a reel, so all formats needed.
“Since launching the product we’ve had lots of interest, and have started to supply, both in the UK and overseas – mostly at present into the food packaging sector – but we’re also starting to get inquiries from other sectors, including horticultural.”
