SIRANE was in Westminster earlier this week – having won a Green Apple Environment Award in the international campaign supporting eco-friendly practices.
Finalists were presented with trophies and certificates at the UK House of Parliament on November 12 – having already battled against 500 nominations.
The company has won the award for Environmental Best Practice – largely for its work on the Earthpouch – a plastic-free packaging pouch solution.
Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “The Earthpouch is a fabulous product, and it’s great that the judges at the Green Apple Environment Awards have recognised this, and the work that’s gone in to developing the product.
“Being recognised at the House of Parliament is a great honour for Sirane, and the team that went down there really enjoyed visiting the seat of our government. The award is richly deserved for the team that worked on this project.
“Sirane’s constantly innovating, and the environment is at the forefront of a lot of our thinking. Plastics – and perhaps more specifically removing plastics where possible – is the hot-topic, and it’s great that Sirane is able to offer products like this.”
As a result of the award, Sirane will be included in The Green Book – the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice – and may also be chosen to represent the UK in the Green World Awards 2019 and have 100 trees planted in our name as part of the UN Billion Trees Initiative.
The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation – an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environmental group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice.
It was the second award in a matter of weeks – with the Earthpouch having taken first place in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category at the UK Packaging Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London in October.
The Earthpouch – an industry first – is made from a paper with a 100% plastic free heat-sealable coating which is then formed into a preformed stand-up pouch which provides total food security for dry and moist food products.
Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, added: “We’re now working with a number of companies, in many different sectors, and I think it’s fair to say Earthpouch will be on a shelf near you very soon… one of the great things about the Earthpouch is it is also cost-effective, often environmentally-friendly packaging comes at a cost, with Earthpouch that’s not the case, there really are no negatives.
“We have customers packaging a variety of things, from cereals and nuts to protein powders and confectionary, and that list is growing by the month.”
A question we’re often asked is ‘how do I fill it?’ and Sirane has an answer – we’ve also recently added a pouch-filling line to our offering, the M7, which is compatible with the Earthpouch as well as a range of other materials.
The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.
Recent additions included Earthfilm and Earthbag – the same film as used in the Earthpouch but on a reel for flow-wrap or in a bag format. We’ve also added barrier version of the material – with high-barrier soon to be introduced to the market.
Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Earthpouch is a great product, a paper-based packaging solution with a natural coating that makes it entirely plastic-free.
“The barrier version – and the high-barrier version which is going to be released soon – were the obvious next steps, allowing more sectors of the market and packers of different products to use an environmentally-friendly packaging solution.”
The Earthpouch was also recognised earlier this year at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.
