Flow-wrap nylon seafood packaging solution on show in Brussels

A REVOLUTIONARY new nylon-based bag or film – perfect for cooking seafood in the oven or microwave and which can be heat-sealed on a flow-wrapper – will be one of the innovations on show at Sirane’s stand at the Seafood Global Expo in Brussels next week.

“Siralon is massive news for the industry and is truly revolutionary,” said Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director. “Quality packaging for oven roasting seafood that was dual-ovenable and could be heat-sealed on a flow-wrapping machine just hasn’t been possible – up until now.

“Siralon has everything – it can be flow-wrapped, it can be vac-packed, it is strong, it offers a great shelf-life barrier, and the results when cooked are succulent, moist fish.”

Sirane has introduced two materials to the range – Siralon 10 and Siralon 21. Siralon 10 is perfect for microwave cooking and cooking at low temperatures, while Siralon 21 is a stronger dual-ovenable film with a temperature resistance of up to 210oC – perfect for packaging, for example, a whole salmon with a glaze in an oven-ready bag.

Sirane is an innovative packaging design, development, manufacture and solutions company which specialises in areas including absorbency and ovenable/microwaveable products, compostable packaging, films, boards, absorbent pads, and much more.

The company – which is based in Telford, Shropshire in the UK – has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; horticultural and industrial.

It has an additional manufacturing facility in Antalya, Turkey, as well as offices and warehousing in Cape Town, South Africa, and offices in Dubai. Expansion plans are also underway in the United States, where the company is experiencing rapid growth.

Other recent Sirane innovations including microwave cooking bags and oven/barbecue bags will be on show at the Seafood Expo Global in Brussels which runs from May 6-8.

The Sira-Cook Supreme Bag for BBQs and ovens has been developed by Sirane, Europe’s leading packaging development-to-manufacturing company, in response to feedback from clients suggesting it was something they would really like to see added to the range.

Jeremy added: “Anyone involved in seafood and who is looking to add genuine value to their products should come and see us at our stand in Brussels and take a look.

“These bags will allow a retailer to sell seafood with a sauce inside a bag that the user will be able to cook directly on a barbecue or in the oven, depending on preference or the weather.

“The bag can simply be folded over by the user, or heat-sealed as a retail pack. This would allow over-the-counter sales of ready-to-barbecue packs which are leak proof.”

The bag is available in a number of sizes – including a large bag big enough to take a whole salmon – and in a standard and non-stick version. It comes with a clear top panel – so users can see what’s being cooked – and the bag can be heat-sealed.

It is also available in a branded retail pack as part of our Thinking-Cooking range.

The BBQ/oven bag is the latest in a line of seafood cooking bag solutions from Sirane.

Other recent products include the Si-bag – an oven or microwave bag which can be sealed over the counter, becoming odour proof and leak proof. The bag steam cooks seafood in its own juices in a matter of minutes, and sauces and glazes can be added.

The Si-bag is also available in retail packs as part of the Thinking-Cooking range.

Also available is the Sira-Cook Smart-Release – a dual-compartment bag for microwave cooking, allowing product and sauce to be kept separate. Seals open at fixed temperatures during cooking, allowing for a perfect infusion of seafood and sauce.

Sirane has also recently expanded its range of absorbents liners for transporting fish thanks to a new machine significantly speeding up and streamlining the production process.

Sirane’s Dri-Fresh Sea-Fresh range of absorbent liners quickly and effectively absorbs the melting ice and juices released during transportation. The liquid is absorbed and trapped inside the Sea-Fresh liner to prevent spillage and reduce odour.

The machine – designed and built by Sirane’s in-house engineering team – will allow for far greater flexibility in the range, with almost any size or absorbency now available.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Our new machine for Sea-Fresh liners will make us very competitive, and this new pricing, combined with our reputation for quality absorbent products, should generate a lot of interest at the Global Seafood Expo.

“Sea-Fresh liners are terrific for lining crates of fish, soaking up large amounts of water and fluid from the crates, meaning it arrives at the destination in a much better state.

“The cold crate packed with seafood will remain cold and dry, optimising the condition and appearance – and in many cases the value or saleability – of the fish.

“The machine has tremendous flexibility, and is very fast, which has helped us become very competitive. We can produce exactly what the customer wants at an attractive price. Not only that but we can offer extremely high levels of absorbency which are great for seafood.”
