Innovative oak-smoked roast-in-the-bag pulled pork product wins top award

Shortlisted for an award: a roasting bag that smokes the food

A PRODUCT using an innovative ‘oak smoked’ cooking bag solution from Sirane food packaging has won first place in the Super Meat & Fish Awards 2015.

The Tesco Finest Pulled Pork Shoulder in Bourbon Sauce – made by Cranswick Foods and using a Sirane oven-cooking/roasting bag with an oak-flavoured wood-chip sachet to flavour the food – won the top prize in the best pork or bacon product category.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Cranswick Foods have come up with a stunning product, and it is no surprise to anyone at Sirane that it has won this sought-after award.

“The cooking bag technology allows the food to be sold in store in a very simple-to-use ready-to-cook format, while the ‘smoking sachet’ really enhances the flavour. The bag uses a non-stick layer which allows the smokey flavour to permeate, creating a stunning meal.

“Great flavours paired with great cooking technology is always going to be a winner.”

The finals of the Super Meat & Fish Awards 2015 were held at the Hilton on Pack Lane on July 2nd. The other two finalists in the best pork or bacon category were Asda Butchers’ Selection Ultimate Pack of Pork Ribs and Morrisons Pork & Spanish Chorizo Burger.

Three years ago Asda’s Chicken Breast Fillet with Tikka Spiced Butter product using Sirane’s Sira-Cook Self-Seal bag won the best packaging innovation award at the same awards.

Our wood-chip sachets for ‘smoking food’ are also used in our BBQ/Oven Smoking Bags, the latest addition to our Thinking-Cooking retail range. The bags come with a non-stick layer, and the sachet is placed below the layer to infuse the food during the cooking process.

The bags can be used in the oven, or on a BBQ, griddle or hot-plate, and are a great way to enhance sales of seafood, meat, poultry and vegetables by offering something different. As-well as a retail range, they could also be used for over-the-counter sales.

Sira-Cook Supreme Smoking Bags can be fully heat-sealed, allowing it to be the perfect retail solution. It can be filled, heat-sealed and shipped into store as a ready-meal ready for the BBQ, or simply sealed behind the counter and handed over to the customer.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “The bag’s versatility could be a distinct advantage, as it can be sold and used in so many different ways. It can be shipped into store as a product, filled and sold over the counter, or retailers could simply sell the bags alongside their products – users would simply need to put in the ingredients, fold over the ends and cook – genuine versatility in one product. And if the sun doesn’t come out, use the oven.

”The Smoking Bag option offers a fabulous way of enhancing flavours and offering something different. The smokey flavour can really transform the meal.”

BBQ/Oven Smoking Bags are available as packs of three in either small or medium sizes. Other products in the range include Slow-Cooker Liners, nylon Roasting Bags, Steam-Cooking Bags for oven/microwave, Deli-Fresh food bags and Fat-Traps.
