PACKAGING INNOVATIONS: Plastic-free packaging and pouch-filling machine prove a big draw

Sirane's stand at Packaging Innovations 2019 proved to be very popular

SIRANE’S plastic-free Earthpouch – and also our pouch-filling line – proved big draws at Packaging Innovations as we fielded a record number of inquiries.

For Packaging Innovations 2019 we focused on our sustainable Earth Packaging range, and also had a machine on our stand for the first time.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “Packaging Innovations was a busy show this year, which was great to see, and were kept very busy on our stand. Sustainable packaging’s been the hot-topic over the last year, and Sirane’s been at the forefront, developing a range of sustainable packaging solutions – Earth Packaging.

“Having the M7 pouch-filling line on the stand also added a new dimension, as visitors could see not only a plastic-free food packaging pouch, for example, but could also see a low-cost packing solution that allowed them to fill it.

“While we took a range of inquiries across our divisions, the majority were for Earthpouch or the pouch-filling line – it’s great to see sustainable packaging start to get real traction in the market, and to be able to offer such as great solution.”

Now available in standard, barrier and high-barrier, our Earthpouch is ideal for anyone looking to remove unnecessary plastics from their packaging.

Perfect for a range of dry and moist products – including granolas, porridge oats, grains, health/diet supplements and more – the Earthpouch is a paper-based solution with a heat-sealable coating, which is preformed into a stand-up pouch.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Earthpouch is a plastic-free solution, a paper-based material with a plastic-free coating which is perfect for a range of products. We can supply it with a range of different barriers, to suit your needs.

“We can also supply the same plastic-free material in reel format for anyone looking to flow-wrap – this would be our Earthfilm – and also as Earthbags.

“If you’re serious about moving away from plastics, then this – and many of the other products in our Earth Packaging range – might be exactly what you’re looking for.”

The ‘Earthpouch’ was shortlisted as one of 10 finalists in the Innovations Gallery at Packaging Innovations – where we finished second in a close-run contest.

2018 was a big year for the Earthpouch with some major industry recognition– it won a Green Apple Award, presented at the Houses of Parliament, and it also secured first place at the UK Packaging Awards in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category. The Earthpouch was also recognised at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.

Last year we were shortlisted in the same Innovations Gallery at the Packaging Innovations 2018 show for our multi-compartment steam-cooking bag.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “The Earthpouch is a fabulous product, and we were honoured to receive industry recognition and pick-up two top awards.

“Sirane’s constantly innovating, and the environment is at the forefront of a lot of our thinking. Plastics – and perhaps more specifically removing plastics where possible – is the hot-topic, and it’s great that Sirane is able to offer this product.”

One of the questions we’re often asked is ‘how do I fill the pouch?’ We’ve also recently added a pouch-filling line to our offering, the M7, which is compatible with the Earthpouch – and there was a working machine on our stand.

Simon Balderson added: “The machine was a great addition to the stand and generated some real interest. It’s a low-cost pouch-filling line, which can fill up to 80 pouches a minute – and yet has a fairly small footprint.

“It doesn’t just run the Earthpouch, it can also be adapted to run our popular range of steam cooking bags for the oven/microwave, and we had some visitors to the stand who were very interested in using it for this type of packaging.”

The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.

Other products in the Earth Packaging range include our new paper based absorbent pads – which are both compostable & recyclable, compostable & breathable packaging films, and compostable food packaging boards.

Sirane is an innovative food packaging development-to-manufacture company, with expertise in absorbency and material science. Specialisms include bags and pouches, absorbent products, shelf-life extension and dual-ovenable products.

We’re also exhibiting at AusPack in Melbourne, Australia, where there will be a chance to meet the new Sirane Australia team. Visit them on Stand A226. AusPack runs at the Melbourne Convention Centre from March 26-29, 2019.
