RECYCLED MATERIALS: PET with recycled content added to our TX range

Polyester oven bags

SIRANE has added a new option to our popular TX (polyester) range – packaging film (or bags) made from at least 30% recycled material.

Polyester is a popular choice for ovenable films, as well as a lidding film, and our new material with 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material will help a lot of companies tick environmental packaging boxes.

The PCR polyester would be exempt from the impending plastic packaging tax (PPT) which will be levied in the UK from April 2022.

And it would, of course, be great for anyone simply looking to make their packaging more sustainable, as it uses 30% recycled material – and then could be recycled itself, if placed in a PET recycling stream.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Polyester is a very popular food packaging choice, for many reasons, but it will of course be taxed from April.

“So our new option to use material which is made from 30% post-consumer recycled polyester should prove to be a very attractive option.

The product is post-consumer recycled transparent film with one side heat sealable and is designed to heat seal on itself as well as with substrates such as A-PET, C-PET; modified C-PET & A-PET coated boards. The film has excellent flatness, dimensional stability, barrier, and high clarity. This grade film is compliant with US FDA, EC, and REACH food contact regulations.

Potential packaging solutions from Sirane which could be offered with 30% PCR material include oven-ready bags & films, foil-edged film, lidding film, slow-cooker liners, catering liners and airline bread bags.

Oven-ready bags and films can be used as a straight to oven packaging solution for chicken, turkey, joints of meat, salmon etc, and are also sold as a retail product, for customers to pack with their own contents.

Airline bread bags are commonly used for inflight catering, where they are used to cook pre-packed part-baked bread rolls in flight.

The PPT is coming into effect in April 2022 on ‘finished packaging’. This tax will levy £200 per tonne on plastic packaging – with some exceptions.

One of the exceptions is where the plastic is manufactured from at least 30% recycled plastic – so this product would be exempt from tax.
