EXPERTS: Sirane MD among panel of experts to debate the role of plastic at Speciality & Fine Food Fair in London

SIRANE MD Simon Balderson will join a panel of experts in discussion at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair on Monday – “People Vs. Plastic: What is Retail’s Role?”

Sirane’s award-winning packaging ‘Earthpouch’ was recently given the plastic-free seal of approval by campaigners and lobbyists A Plastic Planet (APP) – and it is APP’s Siân Sutherland who is hosting the 30 to 40-minute panel discussion.

The invited speaker line-up will discuss topics such as: marketing and messaging; Refill options for sustainable sourcing; Why retailers should be going into unpackaged and/or using compostable packaging; How can retailers source to adopt these changes? What are the challenges retailers are facing in implementing these changes? The logistical considerations and the steps the entire supply chain need to make for this to be possible. What is the government’s role?

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “As a company, we’re proud of the fact that our customers can now apply to use the plastic-free trust mark on their packaging – and it’s great to have been invited to take part in such an important discussion.

“What most people need to know right now is the facts, what can be done and what can’t, what’s realistic and what’s not. Sirane gets a lot of inquiries from people looking for the impossible, and the industry needs guidance.”

The Earthpouch – the flag-ship product in our Earth Packaging range – is a plastic-free stand-up pouch. It is also available as Earthbag (not -free standing) and Earthfilm (plastic-free film on reel for flow-wrapping applications).

Now available in standard, barrier and high-barrier versions, the material is ideal for anyone looking to remove unnecessary plastics from their packaging. Although it is often used for food, the material can also be used for non-food applications.

The materials can be recycled with the paper stream – a fact that was also recently endorsed by the UK Recycling Association following rigorous testing procedures.

Simon Balderson added: “Earthpouch is a plastic-free solution, a paper-based material with a plastic-free coating which is perfect for a range of products. We can supply it with a range of different barriers, to suit your packaging needs.

“If you’re serious about moving away from plastics, then this – and many of the other products in our Earth Packaging range – might be exactly what you’re looking for.”

2018 was a big year for the Earthpouch with some major industry recognition– it won a Green Apple Award, presented at the UK Houses of Parliament, and it also secured first place at the UK Packaging Awards in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category. The Earthpouch was also recognised at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.

The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.

We’re already working on enhancing and expanding the Earthpouch range, including higher-barrier pouches, ovenable versions and more – the Earthpouch is not just a product, it’s the start of a whole range of plastic-free products.

Other products in the Earth Packaging range include our new paper based absorbent pads – which are both compostable & recyclable, compostable & breathable packaging films, and compostable food packaging boards.

The Speciality & Fine Food Fair is at London Olympia from September 1-3, 2019. The “People Vs. Plastic: What is Retail’s Role?” panel discussion will take place on the Food for Thought Stage at 1pm, on Monday, September 2.

It’s the pre-curser to busy few weeks for Sirane. From September 11-12, 2019 we will be back at Olympia for Packaging Innovations London – where we will be part of ‘Plastic-Free Land’ – a stand-alone exhibition organised by A Plastic Planet. We then head to Nuremberg for Fachpack from September 24th-26th, 2019 (find us at 9-657) and will also be at Packaging Innovations Madrid in November.
