THE OWNERS of a new snack cookie brand packed in our innovative plastic-free Earthfilm will tomorrow (Thursday) find out if they have scooped a top industry prize.

Snackzilla, which only launched last month, has been shortlisted for the 2020 World Food Innovations Awards in the best children’s product category.

The oat cookies are individually wrapped for children’s lunch boxes – and are made from a family recipe which has been handed down through the generations.

Brand owner Marieke Syed said: “Snackzilla is a new premium kids healthy snack brand aimed at 5-13 year old's, with a shared purpose of creating products that are not just better for kids but also better for the planet.

“They are handmade in the UK, contain 40% less sugar than most other biscuits, are a source of fibre and contain no palm oil or artificial flavours or sweeteners.

“The product has been two years in development, reformulating my Great Grandmother’s oat cookie recipe to meet the FSA’s nutritional profiling model.

“With a high-quality healthy product such as this I wanted a premium sustainable wrapper to match - but struggled to find the right product that wouldn’t impact our shelf life too severely until I came across Earthfilm. 

“For a small start-up it was a challenging commercial decision to make, however the pace at which public perception has moved with regards to single use plastic over the last two years has astounded me, especially the education and demand from children themselves. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Earthfilm is part of our sustainable Earth Packaging range – and is an award-winning plastic-free packaging solution, paper-based with a heat-sealable coating. It is also available as a preformed stand-up pouch, Earthpouch.

Both products are available in standard, barrier and high barrier. Snackzilla’s product uses the high barrier version of the film, to keep the cookies fresh.

The Earthpouch/Earthfilm is perfect for a range of dry and moist products – including granolas, seeds and snacks, confectionery, porridge oats, grains, health/diet supplements, pet foods, chocolate and more. We’ve also got a growing number of customers from non-food companies.

2018 was a big year for the Earthpouch with some major industry recognition– it won a Green Apple Award, presented at the Houses of Parliament, and it also secured first place at the UK Packaging Awards in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category. The Earthpouch was also recognised at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.
