ECO: Sirane’s plastic-free packaging could be perfect for the horticultural sector

Plastic-free packaging for the horticultural sector

SIRANE’S award-winning plastic-free Earthpouch could be perfect for companies selling into the horticultural market looking to ‘go green’ with packaging.

The Earthpouch – winner of a UK Packaging Award first place and a Green Apple Award – could be ideal for seeds, bulbs, plant foods, fertilisers and more.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “The Earthpouch is plastic-free and easy to recycle, it can go in the paper stream, so it ticks all the right environmental boxes. It’s suitable for any dry and moist products and can have a high-barrier if required.

“Here in the UK, and overseas, many customers are looking to change their packaging and make it more environmentally friendly – and acceptable to the public. There are viable alternatives to plastic in some instances, and this is one of them.

“The Earthpouch – an industry first – is made from a paper with a 100% plastic free heat-sealable coating which is then formed into a preformed stand-up pouch. We can also supply it in bag format, or as a reel, so all formats needed.

“Since launching the product we’ve had lots of interest, and have started to supply, both in the UK and overseas – mostly at present into the food packaging sector – however, there is plenty of potential for this product into a range of sectors.”

A question we’re often asked is ‘how do I fill it?’ and Sirane has an answer – we’ve also recently added a pouch-filling line to our offering, the M7, which is compatible with the Earthpouch as well as a range of other materials.

The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.

Simon added: “Our Earth Packaging range also includes compostable plant pots, compostable flower pouches and compostable flower wrap – wherever possible, we like to offer our customers an environmentally-friendly alternative.

“We’re putting a lot of resources into our Earth Packaging range at the moment, and it was great to see all the team’s effort rewarded with the two awards we won.”

Green Apple Award finalists were presented with trophies and certificates at the UK House of Parliament on November 12 – having already battled against 500 nominations. The company won the award for Environmental Best Practice – largely for its work on the Earthpouch – a plastic-free packaging pouch solution.

As a result of the award, Sirane will be included in The Green Book – the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice – and may also be chosen to represent the UK in the Green World Awards 2019 and have 100 trees planted in our name as part of the UN Billion Trees Initiative.

The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation – an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environmental group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice.

The Earthpouch took first place in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category at the UK Packaging Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London in October, and was also recognised earlier this year at the Sustainable Food Awards in Amsterdam, where it finished third in the sustainable packaging category.
