What does it actually mean?…. Marine degradable

Marine Degradable generally means that a material has the ability to completely biodegrade under marine environmental conditions including aerobic marine waters or anaerobic marine sediments within a specified timeframe, leaving no toxic substances or residue (doesn’t have any ecotoxicity). Again, the key phrase is that there is no specificed timeframe. So it depends who is testing. The OK marine standard (done by the same Belgian company (TÜV) that certifies home compostability in the OK standards) works on 90% of its weight having biograded within 12 weeks. Tests are performed in natural seawater and the incubation temperature is continuously kept at 30°C ± 2°C as prescribed in ASTM D6691 (2017).
