CFIA: Eco-friendly packaging to take centre stage in Rennes

Sirane will exhibit at CFIA in September 2020

SIRANE is exhibiting at CFIA later this month – six months after the show was originally scheduled – with our eco-friendly packaging again taking centre stage.

The Rennes show – one of the biggest dates in the French food industry calendar – takes place from September 29 – October 1, and traditionally sees more than 20,000 visitors descend on the city to discover the latest innovations in food.

Sirane recently hit the news in France with a salad packaging solution developed by us as part of a project working with some major brands in the country.

(RE)SET Packaging are a consultancy company specialised in the circular economy, who looked worldwide for the most innovative providers of sustainable packaging working in the food sector. Carrefour and LSDH (owners of the Les Crudettes salad brand) signed up to an ambitious pact, with Carrefour promising to make all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Sirane was among the innovative packaging suppliers shortlisted to work on potential solutions – and nine months on the plastic-free packaging solution is the first potential (RE)SET Packaging product launch on the horizon.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “In France alone, 290 million ready-to-eat salads are sold every year. They have always been sold in a plastic-packaging which cannot be recycled, meaning a huge amount of waste going into landfill.

“We’ve managed to perfect a coated paper which still gives the necessary shelf-life. The bags have some translucency – especially when in direct contact with the salad – and there is no need for the producers to use an anti-fog treatment.”

Our Earthfilm Fresh salad bags are the latest in a long list of innovations from Sirane, with an emphasis in recent years on eco-friendly & sustainable packaging.

We have our award-winning plastic-free paper-based Earthpouch, plastic-free flow-wrap film Earthfilm, and plastic-free 2 or 3-side seal bags Earthbag.

And our RePEat flow-wrap film offers mono-material which can be recycled, with a range of barriers and strengths suitable for all types of products.

Simon Balderson added: “Our range of bags and films is growing all the time, and we always have one eye on how to make our packaging more environmentally friendly.

“So we have our Earthfilm – paper-based packaging which if perfect for many dry and moist foods – but also where Earthfilm is not suitable, we can offer our RePEat films, which although plastic are a plastic which can be easily recycled.”

Sirane also recently acquired a UK-based board-converter and can offer a range of board products including cake boards, patisserie boards and salmon boards. Many products can be offered with eco-friendly & compostable barrier coatings.

And boards and films can be combined in products such as the Earthwedge – our new recyclable sandwich skillets which offer sufficient shelf-life for commercial use.

“That’s not to mention absorbency,” added Simon Balderson, “which is our core strength. We have recently developed the Earthpad, a paper-based absorbent pad, and can also offer compostable absorbent pads. And our traditional absorbents range includes cheese pads, ovenable pads and much, much more.”

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “It’s great news that CFIA is still going ahead, and great to hear that the organisers have managed to make Rennes a possibility. We look forward to the Rennes event, and meeting customers old and new.

“Sirane’s constantly innovating, and the environment is at the forefront of a lot of our thinking. Plastics – and perhaps more specifically removing plastics where possible – is the hot-topic, and that is the case across much of Europe. We very much look forward to sharing our development work and ideas with visitors to the show.

“We have our award-winning plastic-free packaging solutions, Earthpouch, but that’s just one of a number of products in our sustainable range. The companies in France we are already working with generally seem very keen on change.

Sirane is an innovative food packaging development-to-manufacture company, with expertise in absorbency and material science. Specialisms include absorbency, bags and pouches, board, shelf-life extension and dual-ovenable products.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, Sales Director, said: “While Earth Packaging may grab the headlines, Sirane has a wide range of packaging solutions. From absorbent pads through to multi-compartment steam-cooking bags, from ovenable dividers to sticky boneguard, Sirane invariably has the packaging solutions you are after.

“We also have a bags and pouches division offering not just the plastic-free films, but products such as retort pouches, thermally-insulated bags and more.”

CFIA is scheduled to run at the Parc Expo Rennes Aéroport, Rennes, from September 29 to October 1, 2020. Sirane can be found at the Stand E21.

The show had originally been scheduled for March but was postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Organisers initially looked at switching to a date in Nantes in September, before finally managing to secure dates in their ‘spiritual home’ Rennes.

This is the 24th time the show has been held, with 1,600 exhibitors.
