AWARDS: Sirane’s recyclable and plastic-free Earthwedge wins a Sustainable Food Award

Sirane's plastic free recyclable sandwich packs won a Sustainable Food Award

SIRANE’s plastic-free recyclable sandwich pack Earthwedge grabbed another award in the Sustainable Food Awards 2021 – our second award in a month.

Earthwedge took first place in the Sustainable Packaging category, just over a month after winning the Environmental Award at the annual Sammies Awards.

The Sustainable Food Awards are organised by Ecovia Intelligence – and Sirane had two packaging solutions in the final 6, with our Earthboard plastic-free recyclable salmon boards also shortlisted in the Sustainable Packaging category.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “We have put considerable time and resource into developing recyclable and plastic-free solutions in recent years, and so it is great to see that hard work rewarded, by yet another award coming our way.

“Our Earthwedge is a plastic-free sandwich pack which can be used to replace non-recyclable and difficult to recycle packs and is just starting to take off… and the judges were seemingly very impressed by the potential to really make a positive change.

“There really is no need for sandwiches to be packed in packaging which is just destined for landfill, there are solutions out that, including the Earthwedge.”

Traditional sandwich packs are difficult or impossible to recycle, PE-coated and laminated packs invariably end up in landfill, despite any claims on the packs, and this is a chance to offer the market a genuinely recyclable alternative.

The judges said the Earthwedge had the potential to make a significant difference to the amount of sandwich packs which end up in landfill and said that as it becomes widely adopted it will have a positive impact on the environment.

Sirane has two different types of sandwich packs now on offer – heat-sealable, for use in commercial sandwich packing, and tabbed for use in delis/sandwich shops where the packs are made up and sold the same day.

The Earthwedge has been developed using a combination of coated boards and papers. This means that the whole pack can be recycled as part of the paper stream.

The Earthboard salmon board – also shortlisted in the Sustainable Packaging category – is again board-based and has been designed as a sustainable alternative to the millions or boards (normally gold, silver or black) used every week which are not recyclable due to the metallised polyester structure.

Our Earthboard Salmon Boards are available in both standard and custom sizes and in any non-metallic colour. We can also offer random and registered print. Our standard thickness is 830 microns/555gsm, but other grades are available.

Boards are suitable for freezing and thawing – and offer excellent moisture resistance.

Like the sandwich packs, our Earthboard can be recycled with the paper.

Simon Balderson added: “These are both great products, which we are very proud of. It is great that they both made the final six, and of course tremendous news that the judges place the Earthwedge in first place – but well done all the finalists, as they are all making packaging which is better for the environment.”
