Busy once again at the Global Seafood Expo

INNOVATIVE seafood packaging solutions proved popular when Sirane exhibited at the recent Seafood Expo Global in Brussels – the world’s biggest seafood trade show.

Value-added food packaging solutions including microwaveable steam cooking bags, absorbent salmon boards and bags suitable for a barbecue/oven created a huge stir.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, director of sales for food packaging, said: “This year’s Brussels show was again incredible. We often had potential customers queuing up to come and talk.

“Our various cooking bag solutions, absorbent liners for transportation and absorbent salmon boards in particular were proving very popular with visitors to our stand.”

One product that really created a buzz was the new Sira-CookTM SupremeTM cooking bag.

Simon Balderson, Sirane managing director, said: “Our new Sira-CookTM SupremeTM cooking bag has so many potential uses – and offers numerous advantages to users.

“It is a foil bag capable of withstanding significant direct heat, allowing for its use on a barbecue as well as in an oven. The food will be tender, retain all the juices and flavours as well as the goodness, and could be sold over the counter in the pack.

“It is even available with a non-stick layer – making it perfect for retailing seafood.

“For the customer there would be no mess, no smell, and no need to handle the food. The bag can be heat-sealed or folded over, and add genuine value to retail food sales.”

The Sira-CookTM SupemeTM bag is the latest in a line of innovative cooking bag solutions from Sirane – Europe’s leading packaging development-to-manufacture company – and some of the company’s other cooking bag solutions also proved to be very popular.

Other recent innovations include the Si-bagTM – an oven or microwave bag which can be sealed over the counter, becoming odour proof and leak proof. The bag steam cooks seafood in its own juices in a matter of minutes, and sauces and glazes can be added.

Also popular was the Sira-CookTM Smart-ReleaseTM – a dual-compartment bag for microwave cooking, allowing the product and sauce to be kept separate. Seals open only at a fixed temperature during cooking, allowing for a perfect infusion of seafood and sauce.

Sirane’s absorbent liners for transporting fish – a range that was expanded last year thanks to a new machine significantly speeding up and streamlining the production process – were equally popular.  The Dri-Fresh® Sea-FreshTM range of absorbent liners quickly and effectively absorbs the melting ice and juices released during transportation. The liquid is absorbed and trapped inside the Sea-Fresh liner to prevent spillage and reduce odour.

The machine – designed and built by Sirane’s in-house engineering team – will allow for far greater flexibility in the range, with almost any size or absorbency now available.

Simon Balderson added: “Our new machine for Sea-FreshTM liners will make us very competitive. With this new pricing, combined with our reputation for quality absorbent products, I’m not surprised there was a high level of interest.

“Sea-Fresh liners are terrific for lining crates of fish, soaking up large amounts of water and fluid from the crates, meaning it arrives at the destination in a much better state.

“The cold crate packed with seafood will remain cold and dry, optimising the condition and appearance – and in many cases the value or saleability – of the fish.”
